About

Unlike its name implies, Frosty Ferns are not true ferns. Most wild species are found in tropical America and Asia, but some come from Japan, North America, South African and Australia. They can be used for edging, covering pillars, hanging baskets and terrariums.

Frosty Fern is a low light plant and prefers shady locations. It can tolerate early morning, and very late afternoon light only.

Frosty Fern should always stay moist and never dry out. High moisture levels are extremely important for this plant to thrive.

Frosty Fern will grow well in temperatures between 75 and 85 °F. The temperature should never go below 50 °F.

Use a 10-10-10 liquid and organic fern fertilizer, diluted to a quarter strenght, every two or three weeks. 

When Frosty Fern receives too much light, or it's placed in full sun for too long, it will wilt very quickly within a few hours.

The air around the plant must stay as humid as possible by using a humidity tray or a humidifier.

Frosty Fern can be susceptible to fungus if the temperature is too low.

Avoid fertilizing when the tips are white.

Story

The Selaginellaceae family includes more than 700 species of mossy or fernlike seedless plants, widely distributed in all parts of the world, particularly in the tropics. Many are forest plants; some grow on trees, but others thrive in dry or seasonally dry areas. Frosty Fern usually creeps beneath canopies as a thick ground cover, therefore is a plant used to enjoying shade and humidity.
